I really did wish they left this song in the theatrical version. Beautiful scene... just beautiful.

not only did it seem to bring the whole picture to a dead stop, it was also a pretty preposterous time for her to start singing. but the song was so good no one knew what to do - or, even worse, everyone knew what had to be done. fortunately, menken was the first one to stand up and say, "we've got to cut the song". everyone heaved a sigh of relief. the scene was cut and the song wound up being played over the end credits.

typically, the last third of every disney movie has no music, except maybe a march to the big fight ("kill the beast"). the story's picking up steam for a big finish and no one wants to stop for a song. so at preview screenings, test audiences began to groan. they'd hear the piano begin tinkling and they'd begin thinking, "oh, no! they're going to sing"! continued below.

"the entire song was not lyric-specific. there were no visuals, and they weren't doing anything. it was just her saying, 'i love you'", sito said. "smith is tied to a stick in a hut that's empty with her kneeling in front of him. ed gombert did the storyboards and said, 'i keep trying to get out of this room...'" gombert finally resorted to a montage of flashbacks. another thing working against the song was its placement. continued below.

below is an excerpt from the book 'mouse under glass: secrets of disney animation and theme parks' by david koenig, author of 'mouse tales' and 'more mouse tales': also animated was a sequence in which pocahontas visits john smith imprisoned in an indian hut the night before he is sentenced to die, and she sings the reflective "if i never knew you". the beautiful ballad had grammy written all over it, but presented a big challenge for the animators. continued below.
