Reason for assembling together could be to use a function available on the Central piece (e.g a function that sends data to the earth or whatever...)

Possible Application: A robot is sent to a remote area (e.g Arctic Circle) for exploration in one piece. After being dropped off, it splits into several pieces programmed to explore different areas. (This will yield some sort of parallel processing, thus making things much faster). After the pieces perform their tasks, they assemble themselves together to one piece. There are lots of other possible applications.

Chair by form or chair by function? You probably can't sit in it without breaking it/wearing down the mechanics.
